Microsoft 365 & Windows Updates for Business
This category covers the Microsoft products that Australian businesses and home users rely on every day, including Windows, Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365. It is written for small and medium businesses and individual users who want to understand what a Microsoft announcement, update or known issue means for them, without having to read through technical release notes.
Articles here include end-of-support dates, bugs that Microsoft has confirmed, updates that have been paused or changed, licensing issues and Microsoft security research. Recent posts look at Microsoft’s 2026 Digital Defense Report and what it says about stolen logins, the paused KB5002907 update that made Office 2016 and 2019 licences appear unlicensed, Office LTSC 2021 reaching the end of security support on 13 October 2026, and a copy and paste problem in Excel.
Some general guidance applies to most Microsoft environments:
Install Windows and Office updates regularly. Most security fixes are delivered through monthly updates, and devices that fall behind are easier to attack.
Track end-of-support dates for the versions you use. Unsupported software stops receiving security fixes, so plan upgrades before the deadline.
Turn on multi-factor authentication for every Microsoft 365 account, especially administrator accounts, as stolen passwords remain one of the most common ways in.
If you manage Microsoft 365 for a business, check the Service health and Message center pages in the Microsoft 365 admin centre for known issues and upcoming changes.
When an update causes a problem, check whether Microsoft has acknowledged it before making changes, as a fix or workaround is often published.
